I am a bit surprised to find that I'm touched by the "death" of ... uh ... device. It's easy to understand the affection researchers must feel for something that made their lives so much easier.

As a diver, I know how quickly events can become deadly. As a software developer, I know how difficult it must be to program a device to cope. I have written programs that seemed to take on a "personality", so I can understand the affection of those that used ABE -- good job buddy.

"ABE was equipped with several independent systems to bring it back to the surface at the end of a dive or should a fault occur." maybe these hadnt been tested in a while?
