Massachusetts issues a soy sprout warning

Apr 24 ,Medicine & Health

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health is warning people not to consume any Chang Farm-brand soy sprouts because of possible contamination.

The agency said the sprouts, produced by Chang Farms of Whatley Mass., might be contaminated by a bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes, that can produce severe illness.

The affected product is packaged in 12-ounce plastic bags, with a "Sell By" date of April 19, 2008. The spouts were distributed to retail stores in Massachusetts.

Consumers with questions about the warning can contact the state's Department of Public Health at 617-983-6712.

Even lean individuals who gain weight are at risk
Healthy individuals who gain weight, even to a weight still considered normal, are at risk for developing chronic kidney disease (CKD), according to a study appearing in the September 2008 issue of the Journal of the American Society Nephrology (JASN). The study suggests that CKD should be added to the list of conditions that are associated with weight gain, including diabetes and hypertension.
CU-Boulder returns $3M to NASA in satellite design, operation cost savings
The University of Colorado at Boulder took an unusual step today by returning nearly $3 million in cost savings to NASA for an award-winning satellite mission designed, built and controlled by the university to study how the sun's variation influences Earth's climate and atmosphere.
Two for One: New Design Enables More Cost-Effective Quantum Key Distribution
Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology have demonstrated a simpler and potentially lower-cost method for distributing strings of digits, or “keys,” for use in quantum cryptography, the most secure method of transmitting data. The new “quantum key distribution” (QKD) method, outlined in an upcoming paper, minimizes the required number of detectors, by far the most costly components in quantum cryptography.
Physicist Claims First Real Demonstration of Cold Fusion
To many people, cold fusion sounds too good to be true. The idea is that, by creating nuclear fusion at room temperature, researchers can generate a nearly unlimited source of power that uses water as fuel and produces almost zero waste. Essentially, cold fusion would make oil obsolete.
Important Plant Enzymes Identified
Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory have identified enzymes important in the modification of isoflavonoids, natural plant products that help plants resist fungal infections, and may have beneficial health effects for humans as well. The research, which will be published online May 22, 2008, in The Plant Journal, may pave the way for implanting the isoflavonoid-synthesis pathway into bioenergy crops to promote disease resistance and thereby prevent yield losses, and/or to enhance the production of other useful chemical feedstocks.

Different mutations in single gene suggest Parkinson's is primarily an inherited genetic disorder
Two new international studies by researchers at the Mayo Clinic site in Florida are rounding out the notion that Parkinson’s disease is largely caused by inherited genetic mutations that pass through scores of related generations over hundreds, if not thousands of years. These genetic influences, which can be small but additive, or large and causative, overturn common beliefs that the neurodegenerative disease mostly occurs in a random fashion or is due to undetermined environmental factors.
