Briefs: CSL, Nokia offer video-sharing service

Nov 07 ,Technology

Nokia and Hong Kong's CSL launched Monday Asia's first video-sharing service.

CSL will be working with the Finnish mobile group and use Nokia's Internet protocol multimedia subsystem to allow cell phones to receive video imaging while on the phone.

"Video sharing is a natural expansion of voice calls and an advancement of normal video calls," Hubert Ng, chief executive of CSL, said in a news release.

Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed.

Finding the right soliton for future networks
European researchers say their study of self-sustaining solitary light wave packets could result in a new generation of computers and optical telecommunications networks. Using light rather than electronic or magnetic devices to store and move data is quicker, more energy efficient and cost-effective, and cavity solitons could be the key to unlocking this technology.

Scaling the Plant Cell Wall
Scientists are one step closer to understanding how plants synthesize the fibrous carbohydrates that make up their cell walls. Cell-wall polysaccharides, as they are known, constitute a major source of dietary fiber and have numerous commercial applications. Yet despite great interest and extensive efforts, scientists haven’t identified many of the enzymes that link sugar molecules into these lengthy fibers—until now. Using a powerful method, researchers have characterized a family of these enzymes derived from rice and the mustard plant, Arabidopsis.
