Infineon to spin off memory unit in May

Mar 31 ,Technology

Infineon Technologies will complete the spinoff of its memory-products unit ahead of schedule later this spring.

Infineon said the new Munich, Germany-based company called Qimonda would commence operations May 1, two months earlier than originally planned.

"Through the strategic realignment, Infineon is significantly strengthening its competitive position," said Infineon Chief Executive Officer Wolfgang Ziebart. "Both forceful players will operate in their own markets as industry leaders."

Qimonda will hit the ground running as one of the leading DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) product companies in the world with five 300 mm semiconductor wafer manufacturing sites around the world. The new company will be diversifying into the consumer products, graphics and mobile-communications sectors as well as transitioning to the 75 nanometer technology mode.

The new company will operate as a unit of Infineon until an initial public offering at a date to be determined.

Drives the Development of Future Memory Generations for Computing and Servers

Infineon Technologies AG, a leading supplier of memory products, today announced that it has supplied the industry’s first DDR3 (Double Data Rate 3) devices and modules to leading PC industry developers. This milestone places Infineon at the development forefront for the next generation of memory products, which will be twice as fast as today’s highest speed memory products. First computer systems equipped with DDR3 memory technology are expected to be available in late 2006.
Infineon Announces Trusted Platform Module to Enhance PC Security
In an effort to ensure safer computing, Infineon Technologies AG announced availability of its latest Trusted Platform Module (TPM) security microcontroller supporting the main specification 1.2 of the Trusted Computing Group (TCG) at the "Computex 2005" show in Taipei. Infineon is the world’s only supplier to offer an own comprehensive hardware and software solution compliant with the TCG’s 1.2 specification. Its TPM security solution features a secure chip hardware, a complete suite of embedded security and TPM system management utilities as well as application software, which simplify data protection through e. g. file and folder encryption protected with hardware-based key generation and storage. PC manufacturers benefit from Infineon’s TPM offering since it secures all core components of a security subsystem used for authenticity, integrity and confidentiality of data stored.
ADSL2+ Chip from Infineon Sets New Standards for Power Consumption and System Costs
The German semiconductor manufacturer Infineon Technologies AG has introduced the world’s smallest and most economical chip for “ADSL2+” - the DSL data network of the future. This chip enables telecommunications companies to boost the number of super-high-speed DSL connections that they offer to their customers by approximately one third - without additional investments for cooling or for power supply and without changing cabinet sizes. With ADSL2+, which is expected to be launched as a service on a wide scale in 2006, a conventional telephone connection is sufficient to surf the Internet, receive multiple television channels and place a telephone call all at the same time.
Extended Flash Memory Capacity of Infineon's Microcontrollers to Satisfy Ever-Increasing Requirements
Infineon Technologies AG today announced the availability of three new 16-bit microcontrollers for automotive and industrial applications as well as a new 32-bit microcontroller of its TriCore™ family for cost-sensitive industrial applications. The new 32-bit TC1100 microcontroller is suited for robotics and industrial networking applications as well as industrial high-performance electrical motor drives where it is responsible for processing and communication. The new members of the 16-bit XC16x family offer increased embedded Flash memory capacity of 256Kbytes. They are designed for use in safety-critical automotive applications like x-by-wire, where electronics replace mechanical components. They are well-suited wherever complex software is in demand of large memory capacities - being especially the case in the field of electronic power steering.
