Briefs: Ericsson, Sunrise tie up for mobile TV

Dec 16 ,Technology

Ericsson said Friday it will launch a mobile television network with Sunrise, a Swiss telecommunications provider.

By partnering with Ericsson, Sunrise will be offering viewers 24 live channels as well as featured sports and entertainment on the go. The service will be based on Ericsson's service delivery platform.

Financial details of the agreement were not disclosed, but the three-year contract will be "based on a revenue and risk-sharing model," Ericsson said in a news release.

Sunrise has about 2.2 million subscribers in Switzerland.

Viking navigation hypothesis under foggy and cloudy skies requires more light
While history portrays the Vikings as skillful masters of the sea, sailing treacherous routes in the northern Atlantic Ocean during the 10th-13th centuries, just how much knowledge, technology and ability they possessed is debatable. One theory claims that the Vikings could navigate even on cloudy or foggy days using skylight polarization, which would not only require specific atmospheric conditions, but technology beyond anything known in Viking culture.
30-year puzzle solved: Light guides flight of migratory birds
Songbirds use multiple sources of directional cues to guide their seasonal migrations, including the Sun, star patterns, the earth's magnetic field, and sky polarized light patterns. To avoid navigational errors as cue availability changes with time of day and weather conditions, these "compass" systems must be calibrated to a common reference. Experiments over the last 30 years have failed to resolve the fundamental question of how migratory birds integrate multiple sources of directional information into a coherent navigational system.

Just in time for New Year's: A proposal for a better calendar
No more '30 days hath September, April, June and November'

Wouldn't it be convenient if your birthday, Christmas and the Fourth of July -- not to mention most other major holidays -- all fell on the same day of the week, year after year? Wouldn't it make life -- or at least planning -- easier, for instance, to know that Dec. 17 would always fall on a Saturday or that January 1 -- New Year's Day -- would always be celebrated on a Sunday?
Richard Conn Henry, professor in the Henry A. Rowland Department of Physics and Astronomy at The Johns Hopkins University, thinks it would. He has designed -- using computer programs and complex mathematical formulas -- a new calendar that would make it happen.
